“”… blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”
These words from today’s Gospel are familiar to all of us and especially to me with my family name of “Thomas.” But we need to turn the phrase around sometimes since many of us take it for granted. We need to ask ourselves, “What do I believe?” When we stretch out the answer to this question we come back to that upper room when Jesus appears to all the apostles and breaths the Holy Spirit upon then to go out and restore the broken and sinful world. “Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven…”
That event should take us back to the very beginning of the bible when “… the spirit hovered over the chaos of the water and brought it into order.” That same spirit hovers over our lives and seeks to bring us back into balance and fruitfulness. When sin has dragged us down it’s the Spirit that brings us back into balance.
So, just like Thomas, we are invited to enter back into the life of Christ. First we poke our finger and then our hand into the very person of Christ. Into his wounds which won our salvation and which now restores us to his love. Can we believe that God so loves us – even in our sinfulness – to forgive our doubts seventy times seven? Or are we so stubborn to think that something that we could do is beyond God’s power to forgive? If God brought the entire world into order at the beginning of creation he can surely bring us back into His love and forgiveness. Happy are we if we believe in a God who forgives. Amen!
