Saint for the day: St. Maria Goretti (1890-1902)

Scripture readings for today's liturgy:

Amos 8:4 … 12

Psalm 119

Matthew 9:9-13

I'm still traveling, making my way from London to Nairobi today but still managed to have access to the internet in order to post this brief reflection for today.

The words of Jesus from today’s Gospel, “I did not come to call saints but sinners” fits very well into today’s liturgy. Especially on this feast of St. Maria Goretti. If you click on the “Saint for today” link above you can read the very beautiful story of Maria Goretti.

Innocent though she was she died a kind of martyr’s death at the hands of a known assailant. While most of us would fight for retribution and death for someone who wronged us, she reached out from heaven with flowers for her assailant and thus brought about his conversion It’s a good lesson for all of us to meditate on.

Just like Jesus who called sinners to repentance Maria Goretti’s attacker was present at her canonization.
